Cultural Responsive Pedagogy Handbook

Description of the Resource:

This new version of the Culturally Responsive Teaching Book has been informed by several impactful domestic and global events that have reminded equity-minded teachers of the importance of principles of equity and inclusion of all groups.

The first version of this book was compiled in the Fall of 2019, right before the global outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, commonly known as COVID-19. The eruption of COVID-19, along with other social upheavals, disrupted many lives. Ongoing state violence and inequitable domestic policies aggravated students’ fears, sending many into states of anxiety, depression, isolation, and hopelessness. The ones most impacted were those who belong to communities in our vulnerable populations. Those of us in the classroom recognized the importance of making sure our classes were safe and productive spaces for our students, looking out for their success with holistic support.

We as educators in this historic moment were given a golden opportunity to reassess our own teaching practices and recalibrate them with a more critical and equitable lens. Open to learning, I and several other colleagues begin to explore the importance of equitable teaching in ways we had not yet imagined. And we were able to ask the question and find answers to, How can we best serve our students? The net result of some of those personal and professional evolutions was the access and implementation of greater resources that we feel are important to share with our teaching colleagues.

Accordingly, for the new edition of this book it seemed imperative to address and feature current research on the following topics:

  • Equitable online teaching
  • White privilege
  • Antiracism
  • Accessibility in the classroom
  • Equitable teaching in STEM classes along with sample syllabi

In addition, the Reading Resource List and Glossary of Terms have also been updated.
