Using OER and Open Pedagogy for Equity
Description of the Resource:
This professional development course explores the vital connections between Equity, Open Educational Resources (OER), and Open Pedagogy, with a focus on fostering inclusivity and accessibility in higher education. The course is divided into four modules, each addressing key aspects of these interconnected themes. Module 1 delves into the principles of equity, especially within the context of Hispanic Serving Institutions, examining how equitable access to educational resources can transform student outcomes. Module 2 focuses on OER and their profound impact on historically underserved students, highlighting the ways in which reducing textbook costs can alleviate financial burdens and enhance academic success. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the systemic inequities in education and the role of OER in bridging these gaps.
In Module 3, the course examines Open Pedagogy and its alignment with Culturally Responsive Pedagogy. Participants will learn how open pedagogical practices can create more inclusive and engaging learning environments that respect and reflect diverse cultural backgrounds. This module emphasizes the importance of culturally relevant teaching methods in promoting student engagement and success. The course concludes with Module 4, where participants develop an actionable plan to implement the principles and practices learned throughout the course. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to advocate for and implement strategies that enhance equity through the use of OER and Open Pedagogy, ultimately contributing to more equitable and effective educational practices.
